The Coaster

by Hooks and Needles Co.

You can never have too many coasters! I wanted to design something easy and quick to make. A beginner friendly pattern that can add a touch of modern crochet into every day life.

The possibilities are endless with this coaster. Make one or make a set. Use one color or many. Bust your stash or use scraps. Use any fiber you choose. Add an optional edging. I include 2 options in this pattern. The choice is yours. Let your imagination run wild!

This pattern will work with any worsted weight yarn. Bernat Home Decor is pictured above.

I strongly recommend reading through the entire pattern before getting started. Take note or highlight rounds when changes are made.

Identifying the legs of a stitch:

Color changes: If you would like to do a color change at the end of a row I suggest finishing with that color and cutting a tail to weave in. Then add the new color and chain 1. This will allow you to finish both legs of the stitch you will be working into on the next row.

PATTERN:

ch 18

1) hdc in 2nd ch from hook, ch1, sk 1 ch * hdc in next ch, sk 1 * ch 1 turn. (17 here and throughout)

2) shdc in 1st hdc of previous row, ch 1, * shdc in next hdc of previous row, ch 1 * ch 1 turn.
Repeat row 2 until piece measures 5 “

BIND OFF AND WEAVE IN ENDS * * * OR CONTINUE TO EDGING OPTION 1 * * *

Optional Edging # 1: Sc
After finishing last row use same color or attach new color. Ch1 turn. Sc in each stitch, 2 sc in the last st. Continue down the side by placing sc evenly along. 2 sc in the last st. Sc across foundation chain (in each ch space and hdc) 2 sc in the last st. Sc evenly up the other side.

BIND OFF AND WEAVE IN ENDS * * * OR CONTINUE TO EDGING OPTION 2 * * *

Optional Edging # 2 : Reverse Single Crochet (RSC)
After finishing sc edging above, ch 1 and continue on. DO NOT TURN working from LEFT to RIGHT. SEE TUTORIAL VIDEO .
Insert hook into first sc and pull up a loop. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook. Insert hook into next st and pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook. * around entire piece.

When you reach your first RSC slst and finish off leaving tail. Thread tapestry needle and insert from back to front, going over the edging to the back again and weave in end to give an invisible finish. SEE RSC TUTORIAL VIDEO ABOVE.
